Julia Salazar is a democratic socialist who proudly represents New York’s 18th State Senate District, which includes the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bushwick, Cypress Hills-East New York, parts of Williamsburg, and parts of Ridgewood, Queens.
Senator Salazar currently serves as the Chair of the State Senate’s Committee on Crime Victims, Crime & Correction, and previously served as the Chair of the Committee on Women’s Issues from 2019 through 2021. She also currently serves as Treasurer for the legislature’s Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Caucus.
What WE Have Accomplished
The Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act (HSTPA)
Julia played a critical role in passing The Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act (HSTPA). This law provides stronger tenant protections and regulates rent increases in New York State.
The HALT Solitary Confinement Act
Julia was the lead sponsor of the HALT Solitary Confinement Act in 2020. This law ended the use of long-term solitary confinement in New York state prisons and provides alternatives for individuals who would have been placed in solitary confinement.
The Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act
Julia led the passage of The Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act in 2019. This law requires insurance companies to cover all FDA-approved forms of contraception.
