Julia Salazar Kicks Off Campaign Against Senator Martin Dilan in District 18

Brooklyn, NY — Community organizer, police reform advocate, and Bushwick resident Julia Salazar will officially announce her candidacy for New York State Senate with a press conference on Wednesday, April 18th at 11AM at Maria Hernandez Park in Bushwick.

Julia is running to bring the concerns of working people to the halls of Albany. As a tenant organizer, Democratic Socialists of America member, and staff organizer for Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, she has been a tireless advocate fighting for affordable housing, police accountability, and healthcare for all New Yorkers.

“The politicians in Albany are putting billionaires’ interests over our community’s needs,” said Julia Salazar. “Families lack the resources they need to take care of their relatives. Our neighbors are being torn from their homes by developers and ICE agents. We can’t afford to wait any longer. Together, we are going to bring a democratic socialist vision for a more caring society to the State Capitol.”

Julia’s commitment to the interests of working class and immigrant New Yorkers is deeply rooted in her own experiences as a union member and tenant. She grew up in Florida, the child of a mom from New Jersey and an immigrant dad from Colombia, then moved to New York, where she supported herself through Columbia University by working as a nanny.

Julia has consistently been on the forefront of her district’s most pressing battles. She campaigned to pass the Right to Know Act in New York City and has challenged lawmakers in Albany to stand up for aging New Yorkers and those who care for them. She has organized with her neighbors to hold an abusive landlord accountable and stood in solidarity with workers on picket lines. Julia will continue to fight for a just, equitable, and democratic socialist New York in the State Senate.
